Comparison

If you're weighing up Copilot vs ChatGPT for business, or ChatGPT vs Claude, start here. On business plans, none of the three vendors trains on your data by default, so the real differences are where each tool fits into your work, what it costs on top of what you already pay for, and where your data is stored and processed. This comparison uses each vendor's own documentation and pricing, as of October 2026.
In one line each: Microsoft 365 Copilot is built into Microsoft 365. ChatGPT Business bundles a wide range of built-in tools, from image generation to agents and connectors. Claude's Team and Enterprise plans give you Anthropic's models with Claude Code, Microsoft 365 and Chrome integrations included. None of them commits to processing your prompts in Australia yet.
Copilot vs ChatGPT vs Claude: business plan prices
| Plan | Price per user | Billing | Seats |
|---|---|---|---|
| ChatGPT Business, standard seat | US$25 per month, or US$20 per month billed annually | Monthly or annual | Minimum 2; new subscriptions capped at 200 |
| ChatGPT Business, premium seat | US$125 per month, or US$100 per month billed annually | Monthly or annual | Mix with standard seats |
| ChatGPT Enterprise | Custom pricing | Annual, through sales | Contact sales |
| Microsoft 365 Copilot Business (add-on) | AU$31.40 per month on an annual subscription, or AU$37.68 on a monthly subscription | Annual or monthly | Up to 300 users; needs a qualifying Microsoft 365 plan |
| Microsoft 365 Copilot (enterprise add-on) | AU$44.90 per month paid yearly, or AU$47.15 paid monthly | Annual commitment | Needs a qualifying Microsoft 365 or Office 365 plan |
| Microsoft 365 Copilot Chat | No extra cost with an eligible Microsoft 365 subscription; agents metered | Included | Eligible Microsoft 365 users |
| Claude Team, standard seat | US$25 per month, or US$20 per month billed annually | Monthly or annual | 2 to 150 |
| Claude Team, premium seat | US$125 per month, or US$100 per month billed annually | Monthly or annual | Mix with standard seats |
| Claude Enterprise | US$20 per seat per month plus usage at API rates | Annual | Self-serve or through sales |
Prices as of October 2026 in the currency each vendor publishes. Microsoft's Australian site lists AUD prices excluding GST. OpenAI and Anthropic list US-dollar prices: OpenAI says its pricing may vary by country and currency, and Anthropic says its listed Team prices are for US customers and that pricing, currency and tax handling vary by region. Copilot prices are on top of the Microsoft 365 plan you need.
Two things stand out. ChatGPT Business and Claude Team have identical list prices for comparable seats. And Copilot's add-on price looks similar, but it sits on top of a Microsoft 365 licence, which you may or may not already pay for.
Where data is stored and processed for Australian customers
| Stored at rest | Model processing (inference) | |
|---|---|---|
| ChatGPT Free, Plus, Business | No data residency option | No Australian option |
| ChatGPT Enterprise | Australia available for new workspaces, at no extra cost | Inference residency covers Europe, the US and the UAE, not Australia |
| Microsoft 365 Copilot and Copilot Chat | Australia, for commercial tenants provisioned in Australia | Microsoft says queries from outside the EU may be processed in the US, EU or other regions. Local inferencing in Australia expected by the end of 2026. Anthropic models are excluded from in-country commitments |
| Claude Team and Enterprise (Anthropic) | United States | By default may be routed to select countries in the US, Europe, Asia and Australia. Usage-based Enterprise plans can switch on US-only inference |
As of October 2026, from OpenAI's help centre, Microsoft Learn and the Microsoft 365 blog (3 April 2026 update), and Anthropic's privacy centre and help centre.
Storage and processing are separate commitments, and each vendor draws the line differently. OpenAI and Microsoft both offer Australian storage in some form. None of the three offers a commitment that model processing stays in Australia as of October 2026. Even where residency applies, vendors list exclusions: OpenAI notes workspace metadata, billing information, logins and external integrations may be handled outside the region, and Anthropic notes that connected third-party services process data on their own infrastructure.
Training defaults
| Personal plans | Business plans | |
|---|---|---|
| ChatGPT | Free and Plus: content may be used for training, with an opt-out in Settings > Data controls | Business, Enterprise and Edu: not used for training by default |
| Microsoft Copilot | Not compared here | Prompts, responses and Microsoft Graph data aren't used to train foundation models |
| Claude | Free, Pro and Max: Anthropic lists model training as opt-out | Team and Enterprise: no model training on your content by default |
The practical risk is staff using personal accounts for work, where training defaults differ. The OAIC recommends not entering personal information, particularly sensitive information, into publicly available generative AI tools.
Admin and governance
- ChatGPT Business includes SAML SSO, an admin console, admin roles, domain verification and usage analytics. ChatGPT Enterprise adds SCIM, enterprise key management, role-based access controls, custom data retention, a compliance API, IP allowlisting and data residency.
- Microsoft 365 Copilot is managed through the Microsoft 365 admin center and your existing Microsoft Entra identities. Copilot interactions can be covered by Microsoft Purview retention policies, Content search and eDiscovery, and Copilot honours the usage rights on content encrypted with Microsoft Purview Information Protection, including through sensitivity labels. Admins control which agents are allowed and whether Anthropic models are enabled.
- Claude Team includes SSO, domain verification, central billing, usage analytics, admin controls for connectors and organisation-wide skills. Claude Enterprise adds domain capture, role-based access, SCIM, audit logs, a Compliance API, custom data retention, network-level access control and IP allowlisting.
If you already manage identity, retention and eDiscovery in Microsoft 365, Copilot fits into that with less new governance work than a separate tool. ChatGPT and Claude both reserve SCIM and their compliance APIs for their enterprise tiers.
Integration strengths
- Microsoft 365 Copilot works inside Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook and Teams, and grounds answers in the emails, chats, files and meetings each user can access through Microsoft Graph. Copilot Studio agents published to Copilot are included for licensed users.
- ChatGPT Business lists connectors to Microsoft 365, Google Drive, Slack, GitHub, Linear and Figma, extensions for Excel, Word, PowerPoint and Google Sheets, company knowledge, deep research, image generation, workspace agents, ChatGPT Work and Codex.
- Claude Team lists Claude Code, Claude for Microsoft 365 and Outlook, Claude in Chrome, connectors, enterprise search across your organisation, projects with sharing, and research.
All three now reach into the others' territory: ChatGPT and Claude both connect to Microsoft 365, and Copilot can use Anthropic's models. The difference is where each is built to live.
ChatGPT vs Claude vs Copilot: which is the best fit?
- Choose Microsoft 365 Copilot if your organisation runs on Microsoft 365, you want AI inside the apps people already use, and you want governance through Purview and the Microsoft 365 admin center. Start with Copilot Chat, which you may already have.
- Choose ChatGPT Business or Enterprise if you want a wide range of built-in tools in one product, including image generation, agents and connectors across Microsoft and Google tools, or if you need Australian data at rest with Enterprise.
- Choose Claude Team or Enterprise if your team prefers Anthropic's models for long documents, writing and analysis, or wants Claude Code for software work, and you're comfortable with storage in the US.
If you need AI processing in Australia today, none of the vendor plans above commits to it as of October 2026. That's the gap AusGPT is built for.
Where AusGPT fits
AusGPT gives your team Anthropic's Claude, processed in Australia. Every AI request goes through Amazon Bedrock's Australian cross-region inference, which routes Claude requests only between AWS Sydney and Melbourne. Conversations and documents are stored on AWS in Sydney, dictation uses Amazon Transcribe in Sydney, and your data isn't used to train AI models or shared with Anthropic.
The trade-offs are real and worth stating. AusGPT focuses on chat, document Q&A (PDF, Word and image files), a shared prompt library, team workspaces and conversation sharing. It doesn't offer self-serve connectors, image generation or a coding agent like Claude Code, SSO is on the Enterprise plan, and new Claude models can arrive later than on Anthropic's own apps because AusGPT only offers models available on Bedrock's Australian profile.
AusGPT Business is A$29 per user per month with 2,000 messages per user per month and a free trial. Read more about Claude in Australia, compare AusGPT with ChatGPT or Microsoft Copilot, or see pricing.

Frequently asked questions
- Which is better for business: ChatGPT, Copilot or Claude?
- It depends on where your work happens. Microsoft 365 Copilot suits organisations that work mainly in Outlook, Teams and SharePoint. ChatGPT Business suits teams that want a broad set of tools, from image generation to connectors and agents. Claude's Team and Enterprise plans suit teams that want Anthropic's models for writing, analysis and coding. All three say they don't train on business plan data by default (as of October 2026).
- ChatGPT vs Claude: which is cheaper for a team?
- As of October 2026 the list prices for standard seats match: ChatGPT Business and Claude Team both list US$25 per user per month billed monthly or US$20 billed annually, and premium seats at US$125 or US$100. ChatGPT Enterprise is custom-priced; Claude Enterprise is US$20 per seat per month billed annually plus usage at API rates.
- Does Microsoft Copilot use ChatGPT?
- Copilot is a separate Microsoft product. Microsoft Learn says Copilot can use models from OpenAI and Anthropic, both acting as Microsoft subprocessors, as well as models hosted and operated by Microsoft, and that Copilot prompts and responses are processed and stored in line with Microsoft's contractual commitments for your other Microsoft 365 content.
- Do ChatGPT, Copilot or Claude process data in Australia?
- Not with a commitment, as of October 2026. OpenAI's inference residency covers Europe, the US and the UAE. Microsoft expects local inferencing for Microsoft 365 Copilot in Australia by the end of 2026. Anthropic's own apps store data in the US and may route traffic to the US, Europe, Asia and Australia by default. Claude can be processed in Australia through Amazon Bedrock's Australian inference profile, which AusGPT uses.
- Do these tools train on my company's data?
- On business plans, all three vendors say no by default. OpenAI and Anthropic say business and enterprise content isn't used for training by default, and Microsoft says Copilot prompts, responses and Microsoft Graph data aren't used to train foundation models. Personal plans differ: ChatGPT Free and Plus and Claude Free, Pro and Max offer an opt-out instead.
