Claude is one of the most capable AI models available, and Australian organisations want to use it. The question most teams hit next is where their prompts and documents actually go. With AusGPT, the answer is Australia.

Can you use Claude with Australian data residency?#

Yes, but not through every route. As of October 2026, Anthropic's own Claude API lets you choose between global inference (any available geography) and US-only inference, and US is the only storage location for API workspaces. There is no Australian option on Anthropic's first-party platform.

Australian processing is available through Amazon Bedrock. In late 2025 AWS introduced a cross-region inference profile for Australia that routes Claude requests only between its Sydney and Melbourne regions, so requests are processed within Australia. On Bedrock the processing region is set by the inference profile you call.

AusGPT is built on that profile, so your team gets Claude without anyone having to configure AWS.

How AusGPT keeps Claude in Australia#

• Inference in Sydney and Melbourne. Every AI request goes through Bedrock's Australian cross-region inference profile. We only offer Claude models that are available on that profile.
• Storage in Australia. AusGPT is hosted on Amazon Web Services in Sydney. Your conversations, uploaded documents and account data are stored and processed in Australia.
• No training on your data. Amazon Bedrock states that customer inputs and outputs are not shared with model providers and are not used to train the models. Model providers, including Anthropic, have no access to Bedrock logs or to customer prompts and completions.
• Voice stays onshore too. Dictation and transcription use Amazon Transcribe in Sydney.

Why processing location matters#

Many Australian organisations handle personal, health or commercially sensitive information. Under Australian Privacy Principle 8, an organisation that discloses personal information to an overseas recipient generally remains accountable for how that recipient handles it. Keeping AI processing and storage in Australia can make privacy and security assessments simpler, and it answers one of the first questions boards, clients and auditors ask about AI tools.

The OAIC also recommends caution with personal information in publicly available AI tools. A managed workspace your organisation controls, with processing in Australia and no training on your data, addresses several of the risks the OAIC describes.

What onshore processing does and doesn't cover#

Being clear about the limits matters:

• Amazon Web Services is a US-headquartered company. Processing in AWS Sydney and Melbourne keeps your data in Australian data centres, but it doesn't change who operates them.
• Not every Claude model is available on Bedrock's Australian profile when it's first released. AusGPT only offers models that are, so a brand-new model may arrive later than on Anthropic's own apps.
• Data residency is one part of using AI responsibly. You still need sensible policies on what staff put into AI tools and how they check the output.
