AI data residency checker
Pick the AI tools and plans you're considering and see where each one stores your data, where it processes prompts, and whether it trains on your content by default, with a source for every fact. Export the comparison as a CSV.
Runs in your browser. Nothing you enter is sent to AusGPT.
Your comparison
Facts as of October 2026. Vendors change plans and settings often, so confirm them in your contract and admin console before you rely on them. General information only, not legal advice.

What this checker compares
The checker covers 13 AI tools and plans that Australian organisations commonly assess: ChatGPT (individual plans, Business, Enterprise and Edu, and the API), Claude (individual plans, Team and Enterprise, Anthropic's API, and Claude on Amazon Bedrock with the Australian inference profile), Microsoft 365 Copilot and Copilot Chat, Gemini in Google Workspace and Gemini models on Google Cloud, and AusGPT.
For each one it shows three facts:
- Data stored at rest: where saved conversations, uploaded files and other content are kept, and whether Australia is an option.
- Processed (inference): where the AI model actually runs on your prompts. This is often different from where data is stored.
- Trains on your data by default: whether the vendor uses your content to train its models unless you opt out, and the setting that controls it.
Each card also lists notes such as exclusions and conditions, and links to the vendor documentation the facts came from.
How to read the results
The coloured labels summarise each fact. The text underneath gives the detail, which is what you should rely on.
| Label | What it means |
|---|---|
| Stored in Australia / Processed in Australia | The vendor documents that this happens for this plan as offered |
| Australian storage available / Australian processing available | Australia is an option, but you have to be eligible, choose it or configure it |
| Australian processing planned | The vendor has announced Australian processing but hasn't made it available yet |
| No Australian storage option / No Australian processing commitment | We couldn't find an Australian option in the vendor's documentation |
The filters help you shortlist. "Only options that can process prompts in Australia" keeps tools where Australian processing is in place or available today. It doesn't count announcements.
What the comparison shows (October 2026)
- Storage in Australia is easier to get than processing in Australia. ChatGPT Enterprise, the OpenAI API and Microsoft 365 Copilot can all store data at rest in Australia, but none of them commits to processing prompts here yet.
- Microsoft has announced in-country processing for Microsoft 365 Copilot in Australia, now expected by the end of 2026. Anthropic models used in Copilot are excluded from that commitment.
- Claude is processed in Australia only through Amazon Bedrock's Australian profile. Anthropic's own apps and API offer global or US processing.
- Business plans don't train on your content by default. Individual ChatGPT and Claude plans are different, and feedback buttons are a common exception.

Using the export
Export comparison (CSV) downloads the tools you're viewing, with every fact, its sources and the date it was checked, ready for a spreadsheet, a vendor risk register or a privacy impact assessment. Copy as text gives you the same comparison as plain text to paste into an email or a report.
Limits of this checker
- It reflects published documentation, not your contract. Enterprise agreements can include different terms.
- Residency isn't the same as jurisdiction. Most of these vendors, and the cloud platforms AusGPT runs on, are US companies, so US law can reach data they hold in Australia. Our data residency guide explains the US CLOUD Act and the Australia-US agreement.
- Vendors change plans, regions and model lists often. Check the linked sources and your admin console before you rely on a result.
How we keep it up to date
The dataset sits in the page's code, and every fact carries the URL of the vendor page it came from and the date we checked it. We check each fact against the vendor's own documentation, not news reports or reseller blogs, and update the date when we re-verify it. If you spot something that has changed, let us know.

Frequently asked questions
- Which AI tools process data in Australia?
- As of October 2026, Claude on Amazon Bedrock with the Australian inference profile (Sydney and Melbourne), Gemini models on Google Cloud's Sydney region for the models Google lists, and AusGPT. ChatGPT Enterprise and Microsoft 365 Copilot can store data at rest in Australia, but don't yet commit to processing prompts here.
- What's the difference between data storage and processing?
- Storage (data at rest) is where saved conversations, files and backups are kept. Processing is where the AI model reads your prompt and generates a response. A tool can store your history in Australia while processing every prompt overseas, so check both.
- How current is the information?
- Every fact was checked against the vendor's own documentation on 9 October 2026, and each card shows its sources and the check date. Vendors change plans and settings often, so confirm in your contract and admin console before relying on it.
- Does this tool send my selections anywhere?
- No. The checker runs entirely in your browser. Your selections are saved only in your own browser so they survive a refresh, and the CSV and copied text are created on your device.
- Why does a cell say no option is published?
- It means we couldn't find an Australian option in the vendor's documentation. It doesn't prove one isn't available under a custom contract, so ask the vendor if it matters to you.
